Hammer toes

Hammer toes are a deformity of the toes that cause them to become bent or curved, often resulting in a claw-like appearance. They are most commonly found in the second, third, and fourth toes, and can cause pain, discomfort, and difficulty walking.

They are caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, foot structure, and the types of shoes that are worn. Tight, narrow shoes that squeeze the toes together can exacerbate the condition, as can certain foot types, such as flat feet or high arches.

Symptoms include pain and discomfort when walking or standing for long periods of time. There may be difficulty moving the affected toes, and calluses or corns can form on the top or bottom of the bent toes. In addition, finding shoes that fit comfortably can be difficult.

Treatment for hammer toes may include:

  • Wearing shoes that fit properly and have a wide toe box to allow for proper foot alignment

  • Using custom orthotics to help correct foot alignment

  • Stretching and strengthening exercises to improve flexibility and strength in the foot and ankle

  • Using a splint or pad to help alleviate pressure on the bent toes

To prevent hammer toes, it is important to wear shoes that fit properly and have a wide toe box to allow for proper foot alignment. Avoiding high heels and tight, narrow shoes can also help to prevent hammer toes. Stretching and strengthening exercises can help to improve flexibility and strength in the foot and ankle, which can help to prevent or alleviate the pain associated with hammer toes.

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your toes, it is important to seek treatment. With proper care and prevention, hammer toes can be avoided, and you can continue to stay active and healthy.
