Warts (Verruca Pedis)

Plantar warts also called Verruca pedis, are small light coloured or skin-coloured skin growths. They can be rough and have tiny little dark dots in the centre. They are approximately the size of a pencil area, but can be of different sizes, a single lesion or collection of multiple lesions.

They most commonly grow on the bottom of the foot, usually on the heel, forefoot or the base of the toes. Multiple warty lesions can also grow very close together forming a cluster, or on different areas of the foot and we refer to this as mosaic warts. Mosaic warts usually have a main larger lesion, with tiny ones around called the main site, which we refer to as satellite lesions.

Warts are a type of HPV infection and are transmitted by direct skin contact with the virus. Chance of infections are greatly increased when the skin has an opening like a cracks or is cut. The HPV infection prefers warm and wet places such as swimming pools, communal showers, and gym and locker floors.

Warts can take weeks or months to appear after the initial infection. Tenderness or pain may be felt while standing or walking, but they usually go unnoticed due to many patients not experiencing any pain at all. But a great diagnostic test is the “pinch” test, if the lesion is more painful on pinching the sides together, rather than direct pressure, its most likely a wart!
