Medicare, Work Cover & referrals. How does it work?
We are frequently asked questions about referrals to access podiatry services. Read on to see if you require or qualify for any of the following:
Do I Need a referral to See a Podiatrist?
Generally, No. Podiatrists are primary health care providers and you can book appointments with them in Australia without needing a GP referral. However, some specialised podiatry services such as High-Risk Foot clinics may require a referral from a GP or other health care provider.
Medicare Referals & Rebates.
Can I get a Medicare rebate for Podiatry? Yes, your podiatry visit may be partially covered by a Medicare rebate if you meet a specific set of criteria set out by Medicare. In 2004, Medicare implemented a scheme known as Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan or currently called a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan. This health care plan is for those with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and vascular disorders. Firstly, see you GP to find out whether you are eligible. If so, your GP will fill out a CDM plan for a referral and you will be eligible for up to 5 allied health services per 12 months. As of 31/3/25 rebates are set at $60.30. Do I require a referral if I have Private Health Insurance?
Private health insurance typically doesn’t require a referral for podiatry services. However, it is best to check with your insurer to determine the level of coverage and specific requirements of your individual policy. Some private health fund polices may or may not include Podiatry as your listed accessed services. It is also advised to me mindful of any waiting periods of new coverage plans.
Work Cover and Podiatry
In Australia, if a workplace injury leads to foot or ankle problems, workers' compensation schemes can cover podiatry services, but pre-approval is usually required. It is best to discuss this with your GP, medical specialist, and/or work cover insurer to assist with your claims.
Overview: Referrals in Podiatry
In most cases, you don’t need a referral to see a podiatrist in Australia. However, if you have chronic health condition that requires regular podiatric care you can see your GP for a referral for a rebate through Medicare. It’s always a good idea to check with your GP, insurance provider, or contact us at Relief Podiatry to help assist with the process.
