Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
Unlock the secret behind that nagging foot pain – Sinus Tarsi Syndrome unveils the tale of a tiny cavity and its big impact on your every move, from running marathons to simply strolling.
Sinus tarsi syndrome is a condition characterized by pain and tenderness in the sinus tarsi region of the foot. The sinus tarsi is a small cavity on lateral ankle between the talus bone and the calcaneus bone. Sinus Tarsi syndrome typically develops as a result of repetitive strain from running/walking or following an ankle sprain. This syndrome is often caused by injury, inflammation, or overuse of the structures in this area, such as ligaments, tendons, or joint capsules. Common causes include ankle sprains, repetitive stress, arthritis, or biomechanical issues affecting the foot's stability.
Symptoms Include:
Pain and tenderness on the outside of the foot, particularly in the sinus tarsi region especially when walking on uneven surfaces
Swelling or inflammation in the area.
Difficulty bearing weight on the affected foot.
Instability or a feeling of "giving way" in the ankle.
Treatments:
RICER (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, Referral
Strapping
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be recommended to alleviate pain and swelling
Exercises to help strengthen the muscles and improve stability in the foot and ankle.
Custom orthotics and/or supportive footwear may be prescribed to address any underlying biomechanical issues contributing to the condition.
If conservative methods are not effective than Prolotherapy sessions or Cortisone injections can be considered
